V. Portyakov. The Evolution and Characteristics of China's International Relations in East Asia

On the basis of methodology proposed by scientists from the Institute of Modern International Relations at Tsinghua University the evolution of China's relationship with leading countries of East Asia is considered. The forecast is made for possible shifts in the nature of interaction between China and Vietnam, the US, Japan, Russia, the Republic of Korea for the period of tenure of the fifth leadership generation of the PRC headed by Xi Jinping.

A. Voloshina. Northeast Asia in the Modern Chinese Foreign Policy

The article examines main features of the modern Chinese foreign policy towards Northeast Asia. The author emphasizes importance of the region in the matter of successful development of China. She considered the format of bilateral and multilateral relations of China with the countries of the region and analyzed the main challenges faced by PRC in the implementation of its foreign policy objectives in Northeast Asia.

D. Grafov. Chinese Lobbing in the US

The article analyzed the lobbing of American interests in the PRC and vice versa. Particular attention is paid to mutual links of these interests and to the tools used by Chinese authorities for influence on political decisions taken in the US Congress and Presidential Administration. The author made a few examples of interaction between American and Chinese lobbies.

This article presents political and economical relations between China and Chile, key areas of collaboration, short history of their relationship and problems of bilateral cooperation, as well as their mutual ties with regional unions.

Yu. Shiganova. The Characteristics of the Regional Development in China Based on the Example of Guandong Province

A spatial polarization is one of the most serious problems in the development of China. Drastic unbalances of its coastal and inner regions, determined by geographical, historical and political factors, continue to exist after the start of reforms and opening-up policy in 1978. Today there are substantial differences in the development levels between the regions of developed provinces as well. They demand additional resources and have negative impact on economic growth of leading regions. The article reviews and compares the regions of one of the major China provinces — Guangdong.

D. Lebedeva. The Evolution of Macroeconomic Planning in PRC: Searching for the Optimum Balance between the Plan and the Market

The article deals with the Chinese experience in the field of governmental economic regulation and macroeconomic planning during the period starting from the foundation of the PRC up to nowadays. The author analyzes five-year plans of social and economic development in China, describes the main points for choosing direction of development of macroeconomic planning system in China.

E. Levitskaya. South Korean Economy at the Crossroads: Challenges and Chances

After the first decade of the XXI century Republic of Korea found itself before a difficult choice. Despite the success of its "economic miracle" and seemingly robust position in the global market the country is facing challenges that can dramatically change its economic paradigm.

V. Perminova. “Japanese Factor” in Modernization of Taiwan

The article analyzes the characteristics of Japanese policy towards Taiwan during half-century colonial period (1945–1995) and in the decades that followed the defeat of Japan in World War II. It follows the process of transformation of Japan-Taiwanese economic relations at different stages marked by the profound impact of “Japanese factor” on Taiwanese economy.

P. Em. The Subway Development Influence on the Quality of Life and Population Distribution in the Capital Agglomeration of the Republic of Korea

An attempt was made to compare the quality of life and distribution of the population in the capital agglomeration of the Republic of Korea before and after the subway system was launched.

A. Savchenko. Between Desire and Possibility: Special Economic Zones in the Far East (1987–2015)

The article is devoted to the unsolved so far problem of effective organization of special economic zones in the Russian Far East. Special attention is paid to political aspect of this issue. Based on the new archival sources, author shows that periodic come-backs to the projects of creation various special economic regimes in this region are closely related with center-periphery relationship and deficit of financial resources.

P. Gudev. The Sea of Okhotsk: Success or Concessions?

In 2015 the Russian Federation completely extended its rights on the continental shelf area in the central part of the Okhotsk Sea, located beyond the exclusive 200-mile economic zone. This process took place in full accordance with the rules and provisions of the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention by appealing to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. However, this development has led to significant reduction of the legal status of the Sea of Okhotsk, especially in comparison with what was assigned in domestic legal doctrine previously. A critical analysis of what has happened and how this event should be considered due to Russian national interest, is given in this review.

Yu. Gracheva. The Situation of the Naxi Nationality in the PRC during the First Decade of Economic Reforms and Opening-Up Policy

The situation of minorities in multinational States is relevant in the modern world. The problems of intrastate conflicts, national identity, preservation of national minorities' diversity of material and spiritual culture belong to the issue of relations between State, titular nation and national minorities. The article deals with this issue using the example of relationship between the Chinese State represented by titular nation of the Han and the Naxi minority. This article describes main processes which were taking place in the PRC during the 1980-s in the public policy towards national minorities, that began to change the life of the Naxi after a series of shocks they had experienced during the previous decades.

O. Zavyalova. Innovations in Chinese Linguistics and China’s Foreign Policy

Language policy, which comprises not only internal but also external constituents, was revived by China at the beginning of the XXI century. Starting from 2004, Standard Mandarin and Chinese culture have been promoted around the world through the chain of Confucius institutes. In 2013 a set of new research guidelines was proposed by Chinese linguists. It is based on Xi Jinping’s “One Belt, One Road” strategy and for the first time in the history of Chinese linguistics has been oriented primarily to the studies of the most important languages of the neighboring countries, as well as of the cross-border languages of the national minorities of China.

A. Ipatova. The 330th Anniversary of Orthodoxy in China and the 300th Anniversary of Foundation of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Beijing

The article highlights the background and circumstances that led to appearance of the Russian Orthodox community in Beijing and offers the analysis pertaining to the Decree of June 18, 1700 by Peter the Great on proliferation of Orthodoxy in China (seen by him as important for Russia's rapprochement in China), to the role of the King-Reformer in the establishment of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission (REM) — Beijing Mission in China; the expanded outline of events connected with the REM first mission’s stay and activities in Beijing, and specified dating of a number of facts in its history. Particular emphasis is made on the role played by the Treaty of Kyakhta of 1728 in formalization of the REM status in Qing China.

V. Pushkaryov. “Family Ties Are Lost.” Sum-Up Biography of Cossack Family Named the Gurovs

The article is devoted to the fate of the Amur Cossacks — father and son the Gurovs by name, who were split by the Civil War and lived on opposite sides of the Amur river: one on the Soviet territory, the other in Chinese emigration. In their new live both of them had faced serious changes. By this example of a single family the author strives to show the tragedy of Russian turmoil in the XX century.

Yu. Din. The First Political Organization of Sakhalin Koreans in the Fight for Repatriation to the Homeland

The article deals with one of recondite events in the history of Sakhalin Koreans — the initiation of the first political organization during the fight for their coming back to Korea. Few Korean activists established the “Communist Party of Korea” the main goal of which was the fight for repatriation.

E. Khokhlova. Theories of Landscape Painting Chin’gyongsansu in Korea

This article gives an overview of the main theories developed by South Korean art historians since 1970-s on the origins of chin’gyongsansu — “true-view landscape painting of Joseon” of XVIII century. All the theories are combined in two groups. The main points and arguments of the most authoritative art historians in the field of paintings of the late Joseon period were discussed.

I. Dyabkin. Chinese Cultural Traditions in the Perception of Far Eastern Émigré Writer: “Chinese Porcelain Shakes His Head” Story by P. Severny

The article is devoted to the artistic perception of the cultural traditions of the Chinese by one of the representatives of Far Eastern countries — writer P. Severny. In his story “Porcelain Chinese shakes his head” the author refers to the mythology, which is based on traditional Chinese mentality.
