Ya. Berger. On the Evolution of Comprehensive National Power’s Qualitative Estimations

The article provides a brief historical overview of research on the estimation of comprehensive national power (CNP) of leading States. Special attention is paid to the works of Chinese analysts, whose findings serve as an important tool for the elaboration of national development strategies. The current status and projected growth of the major components of CNP are examined, including armed forces and China's economic growth in the future, especially in competition with the US for regional and global primacy.

E. Rumyantsev. Some Trends in the Political Development of China against the Background of the 4th Plenary Session of the CPC Central Committee of the 18th Convocation

The article deals with pressing issues of the internal political development of China, which, according to the author, are in relation to the current anticorruption campaign held by Xi Jinping. The peculiarity of the current situation is determined by the scope of the disclosures made. In the foreseeable future the Chinese leadership must focus special efforts on combating corruption in the armed forces, governmental institutions and commercial companies operating abroad.

A. Mokretsky. Main Directions of Chinese Diplomacy

After the XVIII Congress of the CPC and the coming to power of a new generation of leadership changes in Chinese foreign policy have become more obvious. In the complex and volatile international situation the Chinese diplomacy is actively implementing innovations. The article describes the main directions of diplomacy with Chinese characteristics under the new conditions.

L. Zakharova, K. Asmolov. Eurasian Initiative by the ROK President Park Geun-Hye

Eurasian initiative, launched by the President of the Republic of Korea Park Geun-Hye in October 2013, has become a major project that South Korea is currently promoting at the international level.

The article deals with the analysis of the proposals contained in the Eurasian initiative of the Republic of Korea and their assessment from the angle of Russian interests in the region. The authors consider the approach of President Park Geun-Hye towards North Korea and its policy on Korean unification.

Problems of Economic Security and Cooperation in East Asia. “Round Table” in the Institute for Far Eastern Studies, RAS

The review presents the results of the discussion within the framework of the “Round table” held in the IFES RAS. Topics of discussion included economic development of the region, the rise of China and changes in U.S. policy, Russia’s pivot to the East, as well as non-traditional security issues, processes and factors that determine economic security in East Asia. The potential and forms of the strengthening of economic cooperation, the possible limits of integration of regional countries and major Powers are analyzed.

P. Mozias. Economic Growth in China in 2014 and Forecast for 2015

Quarterly dynamics of China's GDP in the second half of 2014 deviated from the trajectory that has become habitual during the previous two and a half years. At the turn of 2011-2012, when Chinese economy has entered a period of slow growth, its GDP was subjected to short-term fluctuations.

S. Smirnov. “One for All and All for One”: the Union of Russian “Musketeers” in North-East China

The article focused on the history of the Musketeers’ Union, one of youth organizations of Russian émigrés in Manzhouli (North-East China). With reference to the archival materials, Russian emigration periodicals and memoirs the author analyzes creation, growth and disappearance of the Musketeers’ Union in the context of Chinese political history during the middle 1920s - early 1940s. He paid particular attention to leaders of “Musketeers” movement.

A. Khisamutdinov. The Founder of Korean Studies G. Podstavin

The article tells about the life of famous founder of the Korean studies G. Podstavin (1875–1924), who was a professor at the Oriental Institute in Vladivostok, where he founded the first Russian chair of the Korean language, became the first rector of the Far Eastern state university.

E. Gamerman. Impact of Ukrainian Crisis on the Regional Security in North-East Asia

The article is devoted to security issues in North-East Asia, the transformations that have occurred in this area during the Ukrainian crisis. The military, energy and food security, the situation on the Korean Peninsula are discussed, short term forecast is provided.

A. Kartunova. Some Controversial Issues in the Interpretation of the History of Revolutionary Process in China in 1920s

The article is devoted to the unprecedented interest of historians, researchers of different countries, especially China, to the problems of the Chinese revolution of 1925-1927. The author points to many recent publications, based on previously classified documents, and argues on a number of issues of interpretation of the revolutionary process in China in the 1920s.

A. Starostina. The Debate on Confucian Ethics

The article is devoted to the content of the debate about filial piety and a Confucian principle of mutual concealment among relatives, that was attended by many prominent PRC philosophers. The first stage of the discussion, opened by professor Liu Qingping, lasted from 2002 to 2004, the second stage began in 2006 by publication in the “Xue Hai” journal of the article by professor Deng Xiaomang and is still ongoing.

L. Afonina, D. Petrovsky. Regulation of Religious Sphere in China by Stafe and Party Institutions

The research of the religious sphere in China should be conducted with an understanding of the political structure of the country. The complexity of many problems in this sphere is compounded by the extensive and complicated system of state and party organs involved in its regulation. Direct management and control of religious activity in China is carried out on three levels – by the State, party structures, and religious associations.

A. Verchenko. Chinese New Year in Historical Retrospective

New Year, or Spring festival, originated in China about four thousand years ago and, having experienced all the vicissitudes of the historical process, of political and economic reforms, is maintained until the beginning of the XXI century. All attempts by the authorities to overcome the desire of the peole to celebrate Chinese New Year in accordance with lunar calendar had failed. Modernization and globalization did not eliminate folk customs from everyday life of the population. This confirms the conservatism of traditions in comparison with the economic dynamism of life.

E. Ganshina. The Role of Organizational Structures of the Russian Federation in Promotion of Russian Language in China

The article analyzes the activities of organizational structures of the Russian Federation in the implementation of the strategy of promotion of Russian language in China in the beginning of the XXI century. The author emphasizes that, having entered the new century, the Russian leadership has included the popularization of the Russian language in the list of priorities of its foreign policy. The author shows how the state task to revive and strengthen the position of Russian language in China, lost in the 1990s, has been implemented, what are the new challenges in this area.
